Music: “Armageddon” by Evangelion VOX Game Studio: Capcom Date of Production: October 12, 2008
This video complements the earlier video I made - Nero’s Song - also from Devil May Cry 4. As mentioned before, the game itself is repetitive. It lets you play through two characters - Nero and Dante - at different parts of the game (Nero takes up the first half; Dante the second). Both of them have slightly different abilities, so that does make things a little less tedious, but you do have to confront the same monsters. Nonetheless, I was inspired to make two separate videos from this game and to see if I can tell two slightly different stories just by using different clips and music alone.
The music is a rap song from the Evangelion VOX album. If you don’t know, Evangelion Neon Genesis is a Japanese anime from the 90s about aliens and existentialism - you know, the usual - and it happens to have a fantastic soundtrack. This particular album isn’t in the series, but came up when I searched for music from the series. The song, called Armageddon, seems to be strangely appropriate to this game as well, which is also somewhat about the end of the world and the desire to achieve godlike heights of power and worship. The two of them even try to obscure the meaning of “angel” - in both cases, angel being something that is destructive and power-hungry. The song is a fusion of Pachebel’s Canon in D major with rap lyrics, intermixed with a female’s vocals.
In the game, there is a scene towards the end of the game, when Dante battles someone (called Agnus) who eventually turns into some butterfly-like creature. The scene takes place in an auditorium (the same one that starts out Nero’s Song), were Agnus and Dante engages in a bizarre diatribe against mankind. In any case, there were many scenes where Dante takes the stage, and the way he moves inspired me to structure this piece as if he was actually rapping the song Armageddon. As with Nero’s Song, I tried to pick a piece of music that represented the character, in this case, depicting Dante’s irreverence and humor using a song that infuses the classical with the modern.
The clip starts by using the familiar opening of Pachebel’s Canon to introduce all the characters in the game. Conveniently, there was just enough time for exactly all the characters. One of my favorite parts is when i managed to find clips of Dante speaking and synch is up as if he was really singing. Some nice examples of these come up at 3:00, 3:37 and 3:51, while some clumsier ones include the part near 1:51, which starts of fine until the close-up (near 1:53).
I really liked the way the clip ended with Dante bowing, as it seems appropriate in this context, where he is supposed to be performing this song. I did wish it cut to Nero a little bit later, but I didn’t want to slow down the clip too much.
