Music: “Cells” by The Servant
Game Studio: Naughty Dog
Date of Production: December 05, 2007
This was my first attempt at making these types of videos. It was a lot of work but also great fun. I’m not sure why I picked this particular song for this video game, but it seems to match. I think, in part, the music and lyrics conveys a sense of mystery and darkness that works with the game.
Uncharted is an Indiana Jones-inspired action adventure game, starring Drake, who is supposedly a descendant of Francis Drake. Like Indiana Jones, Drake is always getting himself into trouble, but manages to charm his way out of various situations. And if that doesn’t work, he knows how to fight.
With this clip, my intention was to deceive. That is, for those who are unfamiliar with the game, I wanted to see how I can mislead the audience using different clips and the music to tell a different story. As I recall (since it’s been a while when I created the clip), even though there was about 40 minutes of cinematic sequence (i.e. sequences when the game plays a video and the player is not in control of the character or the action), I recall there not being a lot that I could use for a relatively short piece of music. Many of them were either redundant or a good fit for what I wanted to do. A lot of them were also conversation, which is hard to put to music like this, because there isn’t a lot of action. Moreover, the characters talking (in silence) with the background music tends to create an unusual discord.
A tricky part was, at 3:57, when the lyric just repeats “Everyday” for the remainder of the song. With newly a minute left, it was hard to find enough clips that would fit into this part. I’m not sure if it worked as well as I liked it.
Overall, I wanted to depict the adventure of the game, and I think the video and music work well together. In particular, I think it plays off the conflicting relationship between Drake and the female character, Elena, and all the troubles they get into together. Unfortunately, I think the process of encoding the video made it somewhat dark, and I didn’t try to correct the lighting for this clip, so some of the scenes come across a bit dark. Fortunately, there are enough that are bright and sunny. The people who have seen this clip seem to enjoy it.
